The Life of a Film Critic: As Told by Shawn Edwards

During Black History Month, the Shawn Edwards, one of the most influential voices in film criticism, invites the public to experience his extraordinary journey in The Life of a Film Critic: As Told by Shawn Edwards.

This immersive exhibit chronicles more than 25 years of groundbreaking work in television film criticism, marking a historic milestone—the longest-tenured Black film critic in television history. Hosted at the Black Archives of Mid-America, the exhibit serves as both a personal reflection and a cultural time capsule of Black excellence in media.

About the Exhibit

This exhibit explores the professional and personal evolution of Shawn Edwards—from the streets of Kansas City to Hollywood and back—capturing the restless creativity, drive, and vision that shaped his career.

Visitors will experience:

  • The tools and techniques Edwards used to build his career
  • Iconic films and artists he championed
  • Rare behind-the-scenes moments and interviews
  • Creative works and productions he helped bring to life
  • Personal inspirations that fueled his journey

More than a retrospective, the exhibit is a living archive—a testament to perseverance, creativity, and purpose.

“I hit the benchmark of twenty-five years on television on Fox 4 News as a film critic. This felt like the perfect time to look back, reflect, and share the experiences that inspired me—especially as I work to bring the Black Movie Hall of Fame to life.”
— Shawn Edwards
