Annual Black History Month Luncheon

Annual Black History Month Luncheon

Join Us February 18, 2023 for this great event. Make sure you RSVP as seats are limited!

It appears more often that information regarding black stories is mismanaged, reconstructed, or omitted. Anyone who has attempted to tell the full, honest story is silenced, defunded, or discredited. Largely, educators either ignore, or briefly cover, the horrors of enslavement. We’re taught false narratives like “workers” were “brought over” from Africa; the Civil War was about “States’ rights;” and the origins of current day policing being the slave catching patrols are never
mentioned. We’re taught the “happy, faithful slave” narrative but scarcely learn about slave revolts and resistance. Will we control our Narrative or continue to allow others to fabricate the stories?

The Black Archives of Mid-America in Kansas City is focusing on that question at our Black History Month Luncheon as we celebrate the movement and process of “Owning our Narrative.”

Our Keynote Speaker does this better than just about anyone. The Academy Award Winning Film director and screenwriter Kevin Willmott takes charge of the presentation of the Black American narrative with his movie making, as a Professor of Film, and in mentoring actors and other filmmakers. We are honored to have him speak at this year’s event.
The celebration will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at 11:30 A.M. in Pierson
Auditorium on the UMKC Campus, 5100 Rockhill Road, in Kansas City, Missouri. Come join us for this wonderful occasion.

In addition to your presence, participation and sponsorship of our luncheon, we need your financial support in order to continue our efforts to collect, preserve, exhibit, educate, and share African American History. The Black Archives of Mid-America is a registered 501 (c)3 non- profit organization, so your donations are tax-exempt. We will be good stewards of your donations.
